Nala and Damayanti

Nala and Damayanti, in Nalacharitham, Kathakali performance

When you do something daily, following one-step-at-a-time doctrine then the action, the pause, the contemplation and the correction that follows(especially when you are just a learner)gives you immense pleasure. It is like the kind of bliss you attain with meditation. This painting was an experience of different aspects of art: trying to know the art of dance, story telling, subtle expressions, music and colours. When you arrive, even when you find faults in your work, it is content: the joy of knowing, learning and living.

Kathakali has that majestic grandeur in all its aspects. Moreover, the story of Nala and Damayanti is one of its kind reinforcing the power of true love. Love is not just giving and taking, having happiness together or always-in-agreement kind of feel, but rather it is knowing the person, valuing, believing, understanding and standing tall for the person in all odd situations(not necessarily in the same space and time). The story and the artform(Kathakali) together is a feast to eyes, ears and soul. The only requirements are time and heart.

I bow to each and every artist for whom art is a way of ultimate devotion, understanding and living. Proud to be born in a land rich in its culture.
